Quicksilver Golf Club Hosts EWGA Ohio Valley District Semi-Final Event

Ohio Valley District Semi-Final for EWGA Championship

Midway, Pa. – The EWGA Pittsburgh Chapter hosted the Ohio Valley District Semi-Final at Quicksilver Golf Club on August 12, 2017.  The EWGA District Semi-Final events take place at 15 venues nationwide during a three month period for golfers who advanced from their local Chapter Championship.    

Now in its 22nd year, the EWGA Championship is the largest women’s amateur golf tournament of its kind, with more than 2,400 members participating annually.  The competitive tournament appeals to EWGA members of all skill levels as it includes five flights of Stroke Play Competition as well as a Scramble Division.  Participants compete in a local Chapter Championship, presented by Guardian Life Insurance of America, then advance to the district semi-finals at one of 15 venues nationwide.  The event concludes with the national EWGA Championship, an exciting two-day finals competition that will be held at Hot Springs Village in Hot Springs, Arkansas on October 6 and 7.

The Ohio Valley District Semi-Final was held August 12, 2017at Quicksilver Golf Club in Midway PA. There were 86 EWGA members competing from 8 Chapters (Canton, OH; Central Indiana; Charleston Regional, WV; Cincinnati, OH; Columbus, OH; Dayton, OH; Louisville Region, KY; and Pittsburgh, PA)with 18 ladies earning advancement opportunities to the EWGA Championship Finals.  The event Low Gross honors went to Christine DeRienzo from Charleston Region Chapter with a score of 84. Daryl Nels from the Dayton, OH Chapter won the Low Net honors with a score of 80 in the Championship Flight.  Earning advancement opportunities to the Finals were the Low Gross and Low Net winners in each of the other flights: First Flight – Debbie Johns (86 Low Gross) from Canton, OH; and Brenda Ramsey (74 Low Net) from Central Indiana; Second Flight – Sally Lukemire (96 Low Gross) from Cincinnati, OH and Cindy Darwal (75 Low Net) from Canton, OH; Third Flight – Terri Mattock (99 Low Gross) from Pittsburgh, PA and Kay Wortham (71 Low Net) from Dayton, OH; and Fourth Flight – Marillyn Damelio (115 Low Gross) from Columbus, OH and Yvonne Phillis (83 Low Net) from Louisville, KY.

The Senior recognition awards (ages 55 to 69) low gross winner was Debbie Johns from Canton, OH with a score of 86 and low net winner was Sally Lukemire from Cincinnati, OH with a score of 74. 

The Super Senior recognition awards (ages 70 and above) low gross winner was Marillyn Miller from Cincinnati, OH with a score of 95 while Patricia Hughes from Columbus, OH was the low net winner with a score of 80.

The Pittsburgh, PA Chapter #1 scramble team of Greer Lowry, Carole Sudar, Terri Fischer and Katie Bohnke had the Low Net score of 65 and were crowned the 2017 Scramble Team Champions. There was a three way tie for second place between the Pittsburgh, PA Chapter #2 scramble team of Marcy Smorey, Judith Mazzitelli, Tiffany Reed and Rebecca Matscherz; the Columbus, OH Chapter #1 scramble team of Lisa Allison, Cindy Swope, Pattie Hutcheson and Daffney Geyer and the Louisville, KY Chapter #2 scramble team of Janet Yackey, Amy Baach, Valerie Reeves and Carol Ormay all with a net score of 70.  The tie requiring a score card play-off to determine the second place winners.  The Pittsburgh, PA Chapter #2 team squeezed out 2nd place by one stroke so they will also be advancing to compete in Hot Springs, AR in the Championship Finals.

Special thanks to the EWGA Pittsburgh PA Chapter led by Chapter President Theresa Wilson with 20 volunteers who graciously assisted and entertained in true Pittsburgh flavor.  The event was the epitome of Pittsburgh hospitality with a phenomenal facility staff, a lush golf course (softened by overnight rain making it even more challenging), eighty-six enthusiastic lady golfers and two Rules Officials from the Western Pennsylvania Golf Association came together to make this event a huge success.
