Birmingham, AL – EWGA Birmingham Chapter hosted the North Florida & Southeast District Semi-Final at RTJ Oxmoor Valley on Saturday, June 24, 2017. The EWGA District Semi-Final events take place at 15 venues nationwide during a three month period for golfers who advance from their local Chapter Championships.
Now in its 22nd year, the EWGA Championship is the largest women’s amateur golf tournament of its kind, with more than 2,400 members participating annually. The competitive tournament appeals to EWGA members of all skill levels as it includes five flights of Stroke Play Competition and as well as a Scramble Division. Participants compete in a local Chapter Championship, presented by Guardian Life Insurance of America, then advance to the district semi-finals at one of 15 venues nationwide. The event concludes with the national EWGA Championship, an exciting two-day finals competition that will be held at Hot Springs Village in Hot Springs, Arkansas on October 6 and 7.
The North Florida & Southeast District semi-final boasted a field of 73 EWGA members representing 7 Chapters (Atlanta, GA; Birmingham, AL; Daytona Beach, FL; Jacksonville, FL; North Central Florida; Orlando, FL; Savannah-Hilton Head, SC) with 18 ladies earning advancement opportunities to the EWGA Championship Finals. The low gross honors went to Laura Beth Yates from the Birmingham Chapter with a score of 83. Pia Todora from the Birmingham Chapter won the Low Net honors with a score of 76 in the Championship Flight. Earning advancement opportunities to the Finals were the low gross and low net winners in each flight: First Flight – Barbee Bryant (83 gross) from Birmingham, AL and Brygitte Lusinski (77 net) from Daytona Beach, FL; Second Flight – Sylvia Sumners (96 gross) and Kim Jones (88 net) both from Birmingham, AL; Third Flight – Christine Lovizio (106 gross) from Orlando, FL and Jackie Dacuk (78 net) from Daytona Beach, FL; and Fourth Flight – Katie Tidwell (low gross) from Savannah-Hilton Head, SC and Julie Miller (84 low net) of Atlanta, GA both carding a 118 with Katie edging out Julie in a scorecard playoff. Julie used a pitching wedge to capture a hole-in-one on the Par-3, 81-yards sixteenth hole.
Earning senior recognition awards were Barbee Bryant (Senior-Low Gross) from Birmingham Chapter with a score of 83; Pia Todora (Senior-Low Net) from Birmingham Chapter with a score of 76; Sylvia Sumners (Super Senior-Low Gross) from Birmingham Chapter with a score of 96; and Alice Ward (Super Senior-Low Net) from Daytona Beach, FL with a score of 98.
The Atlanta, GA Chapter scramble team of Angela Kenison, Caroline Berger, Jennifer Wiggins and Danita Knox shot 67 gross with a net score of 69 and were crowned the 2017 team champions. The Birmingham, AL Chapter scramble team of Patti Reid, Patricia Taylor, Jennifer Whitaker and Donna Snider were awarded second place and will compete in Hot Springs as well.
